U.S. Chess Mates - Frequently Asked Questions
WHERE DO THE CHESS CLASSES TAKE PLACE?
Our instructors hold class weekly in a designated room on your school campus.
DO THE STUDENTS NEED TO BRING ANYTHING TO CLASS?
No, U.S. Chess Mates provides everything. We will provide the chess boards and pieces. In addition every student will be
given his or her own chess workbook to be used for in class assignments.
HOW DOES CHESS CLASS WORK?
Each class begins with a 30 minute lesson. Depending on each students experience and age, they will be grouped into the
beginner, intermediate or advanced level. For the remainder of the class students will practice their skills by competing
against each other in tournament games. Once students have finished their tournament games they will be instructed to
play fun games for the remainder of the class. Once chess class is over students will be instructed to set up and put away
their chess boards. After clean up is completed students will receive their new homework and rating sheets for the week.
Students will then be dismissed once their parents come to class.
**Students may not leave class without a Parent or Guardian unless a note has been provided to allow the student to leave
class without a parent.
WHAT DO THE STUDENTS LEARN IN CLASS?
Chess is a simple game to learn but can take a lifetime to master. There are many different topics students will learn
depending on their current skill set. Students in the beginner group will learn basics such as movement, an individual piece’
s value and attack, check, checkmate, stalemate and a few basic openings. Students in the intermediate group will learn
tactics such as forks, skewers, pins, discovered attacks and double attacks as well as continued knowledge on
checkmating and openings. Students in our advanced group will learn in depth topics such as imbalances, specific
openings and their lines and harder endgame scenarios.
DO THE STUDENTS PLAY EACH OTHER IN CHESS?
After the students chess lessons, they will play a tournament game against another student within their own group. In
addition to learning how to play chess, students will learn how to play other fun chess games like bughouse, sacrifice city
and more games created by U.S. Chess Mates.
HOW DO THE STUDENTS STAY INVOLVED AND MOTIVATED?
Our classes are geared to be educational and fun. We encourage students to learn chess not just during class, but also
outside after class. Students have the opportunity to earn class points to develop their rating. Class points are interactive
chess related exercises that teach students in a different manner than in the typical classroom environment. U.S. Chess
Mates believes parents and family are an integral part for students to become successful. That is why many of the class
point exercises require parent involvement.
BEING ENROLLED IN THE CLASS, DO THE STUDENTS RECEIVE TROPHIES OR PRIZES?
Yes. Our rating program allows our students to gain points, which allows them to achieve trophies. Also we like to reward
all of our students for their hard work. At the end of the school year we will celebrate with a pizza party and a award
ceremony, where we will pass out trophies to all students enrolled in the class. Students will also have chances to win
other prizes throughout the year such as medals, posters, stickers, wrist bands, necklaces, magnets and chess sets.
DO WE PROVIDE ANY OTHER ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF CHESS CLASS?
Yes. Students have the opportunity to attend our tournaments. These tournaments allow students to play, and compete,
against other students they typically would not have the opportunity to play against. These students come from different
schools throughout the bay area. Our tournaments are intended to be fun and challenging. Each different tournament has a
certain theme, and students and parents are encouraged to participate along with the teachers. In addition special trophies
are given to the top winners of each group, as well as each participating student receives a trophy. Please check out our
Tournament Page to learn more about our Monthly Tournaments, or please __________________
